San Diego Zoo Parking Structure

McCarthy Building Companies came to us with a very difficult project. Not only were there walls over 35 feet tall, but they had to slope down at a steep grade, concrete railing and 10’ tall sound walls had to be installed at the top of the walls and accounted for in the design calculations. There are 10’ tall fences, large communications conduit banks, electrical conduit banks, storm drain, water and sewer issues—like a bowl of angel hair pasta— all throughout the project. And all that seemed easy compared to actually building the walls, while working with 20+ other trades in a very tight site. But Hillside rose to the occasion and got it done—and got it done well. Eli Njaa, Hillside’s field superintendent said “This was a fun project. McCarthy was really great to work with, Preston and Paul are a class act. Some aspects of the walls were challenging—we constantly had to stay several steps ahead of the other subcontractors and work as a team to get everything coordinated”.

Joe Henson was the lead designer for Hillside. In regards to this project Joe said, “This was a tricky site to work on. The Keystone wall bridge abutment had to be lowered once the project started. We had to design a special connection detail to transfer the structural component of a 12’ tall wall around a drainage structure. Every one of the 8 walls we designed had special considerations we had to take into account.” According to McCarthy the zoo is ‘ecstatic’ with the finished product.
